No Specialist Qualifications

If you do not possess specialist qualifications or if your specialist qualifications in a particular specialty are not approved by the Danish Patient Safety Authority for the duration of the adaptation and training employment, you will need to complete a 12-month employment for adaptation and training purposes (comprising two 6-month periods in different specialties). These two periods must align with the basic clinical training for Danish medical doctors and include mandatory courses.

Throughout the employment, the department will evaluate the adequacy of your clinical and communication skills. After the 1st, 3rd, and 12th month of employment, the department must submit an assessment (evalueringsskema) to the Danish Patient Safety Authority.

The first 6-month period will not be approved if you commence your second 6-month period more than 3 months after completing the first one.

Specialist Qualifications

If you hold specialist qualifications in a specialty recognized in Denmark, with a minimum duration as defined in Council Directive 2005/36/EC, you will need to complete a 6-month employment period in a department that trains specialists within your field. For instance, if you specialize in general medicine, you should seek employment with a general practitioner approved for post-graduate specialty education (hoveduddannelse).

The Council Directive 2005/36/EC

The department or general practitioner providing your employment will evaluate the adequacy of your clinical and communication skills. Both your basic formal qualifications and specialist qualifications will be assessed. After the 1st, 3rd, and 6th month of employment, the department or general practitioner must submit evaluations (evalueringsskema) to the Danish Patient Safety Authority.

During the employment for adaptation and training purposes, your competencies in relation to the objectives of Danish specialist training may also be evaluated. These competencies will be documented through signatures in the specialty logbook and approvals on competency cards/forms. If you wish to pursue additional training, if necessary, after completing the employment, your logbook with signed competencies will be utilized when applying for an assessment of your completed specialist training from one of the three Regional Councils for Postgraduate Medical Training.
