Language test

To work in the Danish health care system, you will be required to demonstrate your Danish language proficiency. This means that you must be able to understand, speak, read and write Danish on a certain level.

Danish 3 Exam

To demonstrate your Danish language proficiency, you need to pass the language test "Prøve i dansk 3" (Danish 3 Exam). This test consists of a written and an oral part in reading comprehension, written communication and oral communication. You must pass the oral communication test and obtain a minimum score of 10. In the reading comprehension and written communication tests, you must obtain a minimum score of 7 in each test. 

You can take the exam at various language centres in Denmark. The exam is held twice a year in May/June and November/December. Contact your municipality to learn more about where you can take Danish classes.

You can pass the Danish exam before you send your application and documentation of formal qualifications. However, you must have passed the exam less than 12 months before you apply for authorisation, unless you can prove that you have stayed continuously in Denmark in the period after you passed the language test.

Other options

You do not have to pass the above language test if

• you have already passed the Danish 3 Exam and obtained the minimum scores no more than 12 months prior to the receipt of your medical qualifications.
• you have lived in Denmark in the period after you passed the exam and obtained the minimum scores
• you have completed a Danish upper secondary education.
• you have completed and passed one of the below exams and have obtained a diploma:
  • Higher preparatory examination (enkeltfag) in oral and written Danish or Danish as a second language with a minimum score of 02 (the 7 point grading scale) or 6 (the 13 point grading scale) on A-level within STX, HF, HHX and EUX. (= upper secondary education)
  • GIF (Gymnasiale indslusningsforløb for flygtninge og indvandrere) (A-level) in oral and written Danish with a minimum score of 02 (the 7 point grading scale) or 6 (the 13 point grading scale).
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) in Danish (A-level) with a minimum score of 02 (the 7 point grading scale) or 6 (the 13 point grading scale) in oral and written Danish.
  • Further education in Denmark at universities, business schools, nursing schools etc., unless the training programmes were in another language than Danish.
  • "Studieprøven" from language centres (= providers of Danish courses) (until 2002, Danskprøve 2).

Documentation of language skills

You need to send with post documentation of your Danish language skills to the Danish Patient Safety Authority, either as a certified copy or in the original form. You can also hand in your documentation of your Danish language skills at the reception desk at the Danish Patient Safety Authority. See the contact information and opening hours.

Your original diploma/documentation will be returned to you by registered post.

You will receive confirmation sent to your Danish "e-boks" or by e-mail with information about how you register for the medical tests and the course in Danish health legislation - provided, however, that you previously have received a positive decision of your application for Danish authorisation. Please inform us if you change your e-mail address. Please note that you can only register for the medical tests and the course in Danish health legislation, when you have received our confirmation by e-mail.

Please expect up to 14 days after receipt of your documentation of your Danish language skills before you receive a letter sent to your "e-boks" or an e-mail with information about how to register for the tests. (please check your junk e-mail folder, since our e-mails are sometimes delivered in that folder).
