Blood banks and centres must be authorised by the Danish Patient Safety Authority before they may collect and test human blood and blood components.

The purpose is to ensure that the quality and safety standards for blood establishment activity are being met.

The Danish Patient Safety Authority monitors that the quality and safety standards for blood and blood components are met; the same applies to donor selection, collection, testing, processing, storage and distribution of human blood and blood components.

Tissues and cells is an area of medical science in rapid growth. The use of human tissues and cells has given us more and better treatment options.

Human tissues and cells are used by for example fertility clinics, bone banks and establishments, which store stem cells from umbilical cord blood.

Tissue establishments must obtain an authorisation from the Danish Patient Safety Authority before they may handle human tissues and cells for human use.
